The Department of Business Development and Technology (BTECH) at Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in science policy and science-society relations, including candidates who have training in public understanding of science, scientific controversy, high-risk technologies, science and technology studies (STS), sustainability science and/or the social acceptance of new sociotechnical systems, and who have expertise in inter-and transdisciplinary approaches in climate and sustainability.

The position is a fixed-term full-time employment (three years), but may be extended. The starting date is 1 September 2023.
 



Job description

The position is related to the Horizon Europe project ‘UPTAKE’ with the following tasks:

  1. Mapping carbon dioxide removal (CDR) knowledge networks and stakeholder groups. This task examines the status of knowledge production on CDR, including mapping relevant stakeholders, funding patterns and prominent themes within the scientific community. To situate the science and data that may be relevant in respective national discourses, we will map the global distribution of research on specific CDR options and identify potential epistemic inequalities in the formation and definition of what constitutes these technologies (and their role in climate policy). This mapping exercise will be based on a mixed-methods approach using bibliometric research and content analysis of the academic literature, social network analysis and interviews (approximately N = 20-30) with scientists from relevant disciplines.
     

  2. CDR – best practices, politics and values. This task examines best practices in CDR deployment, including an emphasis on frontrunners or leading countries as well as barriers and architectures of constraint. Leading countries have progressive and ambitious climate action and/or many CDR start-up companies, business models or policy mechanisms.
     

  3. Social perceptions, attitudes and public participation. This task addresses social awareness, knowledge and acceptance of various CDR options and other net-zero or climate-neutral technologies (e.g. renewable energy and resource efficiency). It will undertake at least six nationally representative surveys or focus groups to assess public attitudes and expectations. A section of the survey will identify which technological features appeal to which political parties and whether links can be drawn to features of existing technologies and their political support.
     



Background information about the UPTAKE project

UPTAKE aims to facilitate the sustainable upscaling of CDR methods by developing a set of robust strategies through technical, theoretical and practical analyses accompanied by interactive dialogue in a CDR stakeholder forum. As a result, UPTAKE will develop a harmonised, comprehensive, inclusive, integrated and transparent CDR knowledge inventory to evaluate a wide range of CDR technologies and methods, quantifying their national, European and global costs, effectiveness and removal potential as well as risks, constraints and side effects at different scales and their prospects for technological progress.
The UPTAKE approach will enable the assessment of geographical, sectoral, socioeconomic, demographic and temporal trade-offs, co-benefits and opportunities arising from portfolios of different CDR methods. The enhanced socio-technical understanding of CDR methods will feed into an ensemble of state-of-the-art integrated assessment models (IAMs), which will help improve the integration of CDR methods given the EU policy objectives set for 2030, 2050 and beyond climate neutrality.
UPTAKE will assess CDR governance and policy frameworks, taking into account social acceptance, accountability, monitoring and regulations for sustainable rollout of CDR at scale. As a result, UPTAKE will generate an open, interactive CDR roadmap to explore strategies that are resilient to risks of failure and disruption and to minimise adverse impacts on society, economy and the environment for a just, inclusive and sustainable transition.
 



Qualification requirements

Applicants for a postdoctoral position must hold a PhD in science and technology studies, sustainability transitions, science policy, public policy, geography or political science. In addition, strong expertise in qualitative social science methods is required, as well as experience designing and managing deliberative workshops and focus groups in different socio-political settings. Moreover, familiarity with quantitative social science methods, mixed methods design and participatory or co-creation methods is an advantage, as is topical knowledge about NETs, CDR, GGR, geo-engineering, climate engineering or SRM. Expertise in inter-and transdisciplinary approaches and science-policy-society interfaces for sustainability is an asset, as is knowledge of social theories about power and participation. Teaching and supervision experience in the field of sustainability is a plus.
